Radiators CE Marketing

From 1 December 2005 CE marking for radiators to the requirements of the Construction Products Directive (89/106/CE) came into force.

That now means that products tested and certified to EN442 standard by a Notified Body can have a CE Mark applied.

The CE Mark is not a quality mark, but a symbol that indicates fitness for purpose and conformity to the legal requirements of the European Union, with respect to safety, health, environment, and consumer protection. Further quality certification is dealt with by schemes such as BS ‘Kitemark’.

Whilst not yet a legal requirement for radiators sold in the UK, the presence of CE marking offers reassurance that a manufacturer is complying with the regulations, and provide a common ground for them to compete in the overseas markets.

The CE mark may only be affixed after successful completion of testing, by a Notified Body, which in the case of radiators should be a test laboratory.

BSRIA has just completed testing radiators for DD Heating Ltd. Ken Porter, Technical Development Manager at DD Heating says: “The independent test and certification by BSRIA, leading to CE marking, ensure our compliance with the legislation and help us to sell our products with confidence in the UK and Europe.”

The CE mark for radiators is a declaration of compliance by the manufacturer, based on confirmation of the technical data and test results obtained from a Notified Body. The manufacturer is required to have a technical file containing proof of compliance.

Initial type tests for CE marking are a ‘one off’ test. There is no requirement for regular audit testing.

The Notified Body will issue a technical test report. Additionally, a certificate or declaration of the tests carried out and compliance with the CPD may be issued providing a convenient summary of compliance.

BSRIA is a Notified Body (No.0480) for testing to EN442 in its test facility in the UK and also conducts ‘Kitemark’ tests in partnership with BSI.

Our independent services ensure that manufacturers can obtain the vital and verifiable evidence to demonstrate that equipment is fit for use.

BSRIA can test: durability, pressure tightness, and thermal output both rated at 50ΔT and under different operating conditions.
