NICEIC gains approval for Competent Person Schemes

NICEIC is set to offer a full range of Competent Person Schemes, which will enable NICEIC registered contractors to self-certify all notifiable work under Building Regulations Parts F, G, J, L and P using their simple on-line facility.

NICEIC, which has 20,000 businesses registered under its Competent Persons Scheme for electrical installations, is to introduce new schemes for ventilation, plumbing, combustion appliances and fuel storage, and conservation of fuel and power.  The Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) has confirmed that NICEIC’s application meets the criteria set by the Department for Communities and Local Government.  The application is subject to ministerial approval, but NICEIC is gearing up to launch the new schemes later this year.

NICEIC will be able to offer a complete solution to multi-disciplinary contractors and specialist companies, such as kitchen fitters, who in a single job undertake installations covered by several different Building Regulations.  The schemes will cover work carried out in both domestic and non-domestic premises.

Said NICEIC director general, Jim Speirs: “We currently operate the largest Competent Persons Scheme for electrical installations and our experience here means we are ideally placed to offer the complete solution to a wide contractor base, saving them valuable administration time and therefore money.  Multi-disciplinary contractors wanting to join more than one scheme will be accommodated in a single assessment process.  Once accredited, our stream-lined notification process will offer further time saving.”

Those registered with NICEIC Competent Persons Schemes will be able to self-certify on-line to NICIEC that their work complies with the Building Regulations, without the need for Local Authority Building Control inspection.  NICEIC will issue a certificate to the customer and advise the relevant local authority that work has taken place, reducing paperwork for the contractor.
