Halstead tackles industry confusion over SEDBUK ratings

Boiler manufacturer Halstead Boilers has identified a level of confusion across the industry, of the real differentiators between a SEDBUK A rated condensing boiler and a SEDBUK B rated appliance, and to address this is launching an information awareness campaign in-store at plumbing merchants this month.
“When installing a new condensing boiler and to ensure maximum energy efficiency, the obvious choice is a SEDBUK A rated boiler, such as the new Halstead ACE HE, but there still appears to be a lack of understanding over the real features, performance and operational benefits that are standard on a SEDBUK A rated condensing boiler over that of a SEDBUK B rated appliance,” comments Halstead’s Marketing Manager Richard Braid.
“We have created our ‘B is good – A is Ace’ campaign to assist in educating both merchants and installers about these differences between SEDBUK A and B rated condensing boilers, which will be rolled-out in merchant outlets across the UK from the end of March.”
Halstead is keen to ensure that installers appreciate and understand the fundamental differences between the parts and components of SEDBUK A and B rated condensing boilers so that they can better-advise householders on both the short and long term benefits of choosing a SEDBUK A rated appliance, as Richard explains:
“Single stainless steel heat exchangers are fitted as standard to SEDBUK A rated appliances, and these are robust and corrosion resistant to maximise efficiency and performance. On the contrary, SEDBUK B rated condensing boilers are predominantly fitted with a copper or Aluminium heat exchanger and a recuperator, which carries a greater risk of damage on over heating, as well as a higher risk of corrosion when compared to an A rated appliance.”
He adds: “The pre-mix burner system, again a standard feature on SEDBUK A rated appliances, increases the boiler efficiency when it modulates down – on a SEDBUK B rated appliance that doesn’t have a pre-mix burner, efficiency actually decreases when the boiler modulates down.”
Other features of SEDBUK A rated boilers include their overall higher efficiency levels, which means they are cheaper to run and kinder to the environment, and that they can accommodate longer flue lengths of up to 5m horizontally and 12m vertically, increasing the installation options and the benefits that go with this for both the installer and the householder.
